Water transport in heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes
Original language description
This research was focused on laboratory method for measurement of water transport through heterogeneous ion exchange membrane (IM) as its characteristics. This phenomenon can affect the efficiency of the electrodialysis process significantly. The water transport can be expressed as an average number of water molecules transported through the membrane by one ion. Cation and anion exchange membranes were characterized separately in two-compartment electrochemical cell with copper electrodes and solution CuSO4. This arrangement was used to determine the water transport by bivalent ions, mainly the sulphate anion. Results for some of commercially available IM were compared with IM with modified composition. The water transport through anion exchange membranes was between 6 and 10 molecules of water per sulphate anion. For cation exchange membranes the water transport was between 12 and 18 molecules of water per copper cation. So, the water transport number for bivalent ions was higher than the transport number of monovalent ions typically reported in the order of 4-8 in literature. The water transport number of some types of the IMs with modified composition was lower than the transport number of measured commercially available membranes.
