Original language description
In this work electrodialysis (ED) and bipolar electrodialysis (EDBM) was used in order to process phenylacetic acid (PAA) from fermentation broth. In first step PAA and dissociated inorganic compounds were separated from organic impurities from fermentation broth (in this case – 2-phenylethanol). In second step, bipolar electrodialysis with cation-exchange and bipolar membranes was used to remove K+ and Na+ from solution and acidify the solution. By ED, 95 % of PAA was recovered from fermentation broth. Additional losses of PAA occurred in EDBM, about 15 % of PAA, probably due to non-ideal permselectivity of bipolar membranes.
