Characterization of membranes after exposure to high temperature

  • Original language description

The knowledge of thermal resistance of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) is important for estimation their lifetime, especially for high temperature electrodialysis. This paper focused on characterization of IEMs basic properties after medium-term exposure in demineralized water at 80 °C. Area resistance, specific resistance, permselectivity, and tensile properties of four types of heterogeneous IEMs were evaluated. These membranes differed in the material used for their production – polymer binder, ion exchange resin and reinforcing fabric. As polymer binders LDPE, LLDPE or PPR were used. Chosen ion exchange resins used for IEMs preparation were Amberjet 4200 Cl, Purolite A420 S, Marathon A, Dowex HCR-S/S, and Purolite C 120 E. Changes in IEMs properties were closely related to the structural changes affected by enhanced swelling in hot water. Developmental IEMs showed more stable properties in time under the conditions of thermal aging, thus they should be more suitable for high temperature electrodialysis than the commercially available membranes which suffered the most from the swelling induced changes.
