The influence of processing time on ion exchange membrane manufacturing and properties

  • Original language description

The present work is focused on the study of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) prepared with different processing times. Samples of anion exchange (AEMs) and cation exchange membranes (CEMs) were prepared with two different types of polypropylene, which differs in their melt flow index (MFI), and two ion exchange resins. Their processing conditions were evaluated, such as torque and pressure of the extruder, and the membrane properties, such as area resistance, specific resistance and permselectivity. That way, it was homogenized four types of polymer blends and, for each type, ten cycles of homogenization were made. Samples of the first, fifth and tenth cycles were collected for subsequent IEMs sheet extrusion. After membrane foils were prepared, the membrane sheets equipped from both sides with reinforcing fabric were preheated and hot-pressed to obtain reinforced foils of controlled thickness. Subsequently, the pre-conditioning was made to measure the electrochemical resistance and permselectivity of each sample. The extrusion processing parameters of the polymer binder were evaluated, and it had a major difference between the first homogenization and the other cycles. These ones, despite of a similar behavior and values, showed a little decrease in torque and pressure, which could be a polymer degradation consequence. Analyzing membrane properties, it occurred a small rate of variation between the values of each homogenization, thus the processing time did not considerable affect membrane resistance. Moreover, with permselectivity test, despite higher values found for CEMs, all of the samples showed values above 90%, which is considered as a good rate for this type of IEMs. The difference between the AEMs and CEMs could be explained by a lower volume filling of cation exchange resins. The difference in processing times does not extremely interfere in membrane manufacturing and properties. Moreover, we can assume that, in a scale up, with higher time spent in the extruder, the process may not damage polymer blends or membrane properties.
