Magnesium recovery from RO Brines by membrane crystallization

  • Original language description

Due to increasing shortage of fresh water, seawater desalination has become important source of fresh water. Large amounts of concentrated seawater brines pose significant environmental and economic thread. Nevertheless, brines can be a convenient source of minerals, like magnesium. Thanks to a very low solubility, magnesium hydroxide can be precipitated from concentrated brines by alkaline reactant. The main goal of our work was to study the process of membrane crystallization of magnesium hydroxide using ion-exchange hollow fibres. Our task was to assemble a membrane module, which consists of hollow fibres, and then test it under experimental conditions. The module was tested with model solutions of MgCl2 and NaOH. The product was precipitated Mg(OH)2. After verifying the operation on model solutions, the module was subsequently tested on solutions that were prepared based on real RO Brines. The purity of the product from model solutions of RO Brines ranged from 77% to almost 96%. Membrane crystallization with ion-exchange hollow fibres thus might be promising technology for minerals recovery from brines, wastewaters, or other highly concentrated mixed solutions.
