Ionex membranes (IEMs) can be heterogeneous or homogeneous, with heterogeneous membranes offering a wide range of modification options. The new generation of heterogeneous membranes exhibits electrochemical properties between the evaluated heterogeneous and homogeneous IEMs, with a distinct improvement in desalination. The results are promising, but further testing in real industrial conditions is needed.
