Perspectives of the industrial application of homogeneous and heterogeneous bipolar membranes
Original language description
Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) is a process able to produce acids and bases from their salts. It finds its applications, e.g. in recycling of industrial wastewater, pH adjustment of various media or environmental protection. The aim of this work was to investigate three different types of bipolar membranes (one heterogeneous and two homogeneous) via their testing in a laboratory EDBM module together with several types of cation and anion exchange membranes. The current/voltage curve of each bipolar membrane was evaluated as well. Results were compared and discussed from the point of view of the applicability of membrane stacks in different industrial sectors. It was shown that the main drawbacks of heterogeneous bipolar membranes are their high resistance during water splitting and low selectivity. However, due to their favorable price and possibility to be used in contact with foodstuffs, they can be effectively used in applications working in one-pass regime or if slight pH changes are needed, e.g. in the food or beverage industry. The combination of homogeneous and heterogeneous membranes in the EDBM stack is also possible. For example, if highly concentrated acids/bases are required but their purity is not so important (e.g. technologies of CO2 capture or flue gas desulfurization), a heterogeneous bipolar membrane combined with homogeneous anion and cation exchange membranes would be reasonable. EDBM stack composed of only homogeneous membranes should be used when the technological demands are highly concentrated products of high purity and high yield of water.
