Using bipolar electrodialysis to recover sodium hydroxide from black liquor
Original language description
An investigation was conducted on the possibility of bipolar membrane electrodialysis (EDBM) that employed heterogeneous membranes to recover NaOH from alkaline black liquor. An anodizing plant’s aluminum leaching produced the liquor, which contained 45.3 g/kg OH⁻ as sodium hydroxide and had been contaminated by 23.6 g/kg Al³⁺ and 55.2 g/kg CO₃²⁻ ions. Due to the very high concentrations of Al3+, EDBM was performed under alkaline conditions in all circuits to prevent aluminum hydroxide precipitation and clogging of the membrane stack. Using the newly introduced concept of a “pseudo acidic circuit”, neither clogging of the membrane stack nor precipitation of dissolved aluminum was observed within the stack. Around 87 % of NaOH was recovered from black liquor, with a high sodium hydroxide solution purity that made it suitable for reuse in aluminum surface treatment. No clogging of the membrane stack or precipitation of dissolved aluminum was observed on the used membranes.
