Ion exchange (IEX) processes are essential unit operations in water treatment, where they are widely applied across multiple industrial sectors, such as food, power generation, and chemical production, for the removal of undesirable ions. However, during continuous operation, the ion-exchange resins gradually become saturated with captured ions and must be periodically regenerated using strong acids or base solutions. This regeneration step produces highly saline effluents with extreme pH values, which are typically discharged after neutralization, leading to significant chemical consumption and increased total dissolved solids (TDS) load in the environment. Therefore, developing sustainable approaches for the recovery and reuse of regenerants is of growing importance for both economic and environmental reasons.
