Prototype of the final isolated microalgae oil

  • Original language description

A final step-by-step procedure for the industrial preparation and an industrial prototype of microalgae oil with DHA content greater than 30% were defined. For the production of algae (Schizochytrium protists) oil with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), it is important to select a suitable production strain and set the appropriate conditions for strain cultivation, harvesting algae biomass and extracting and purifying algae oil. Strain Schizochytrium was selected from a large number of strains tested for DHA productivity. Two-step cultivation proved necessary. Where in the first step of the culture conditions are set to be suitable for the growth of the strain and in the second step are set culture conditions suitable for the accumulation of lipids in the cells of the protists. Cultivation conditions for each step were optimalized. The culture was harvested by flocculation and centrifugation of the culture or by cross-flow filtration followed by washing the cells with water and spray drying. Powdered biomass was extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction or extraction with isopropyl alcohol. Crude oil extract was purified.

  • Technical parameters

The prototype consists of a quality DHA oil having DHA content more than 30 wt. %, which is retrieved from algal biomass by a set of highly specific procedures including optimalized cultivation, extraction and purification.

  • Economical parameters

Oil with high DHA content is usually extracted from fish. Fishes are a controversial source of DHA as industrial fishing has pronouncen negative effect on the environment. Moreover DHA is primarily producted by algae and fish only acummulate it through their diet and are thus a secondary source of DHA. We prepared a prototype from the primary source, using isolated strain with high production parameters and using environmentally friendly techniques of high DHA content and excellent purity. It therefore represents a top product which finds use in the production of cosmetics and food supplements.
