A Tool for Measuring Alcohol Policy Scoring in Czechia and EU: The Innovative Alcohol Policy Indicator

  • Original language description

Excessive drinking is a leading cause of preventable death in Czechia and is associated with numerous health and social problems. Percentage of alcohol-related deaths worldwide is 5.3% (6.0% in Czechia). To assist public health leaders and policymakers, a composite indicator is needed. Aims: To develop a new index to measure the effectiveness of alcohol control policies on selected indicators in Czechia compared to EU-27 countries. An innovative Alcohol Policy Indicator will be calculated. Materials and methods: Literature review was conducted. The main data sources were primarily the Czech Statistical Office Database, Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic and the European Information System on Alcohol and Health. Results: The Innovative Alcohol Policy Index was enumerated. The results were compared with the Alcohol Policy Scale calculations in our last study. Conclusion: This paper confirmed disparities, but also progressive harmonization of alcohol control policies in EU. Findings in this paper may be considered in a future research by analyzing further aspects of alcohol policy standards.
