The relationship between matrix hydraulic conductivity and P-wave and S-wave ultrasound velocities in granites

  • Original language description

At present, many studies examine the mechanical properties of granite rock matrix especially in relation to the geological disposal of waste materials. Of the investigated parameters, porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the rock matrix are of great importance because it is these that control the transport of contaminants. This paper focuses on the correlations that exist between granite porosity, hydraulic conductivity, and rapid straightforward measurements of ultrasonic velocity in the laboratory.Rock samples have been analyzed from six localities within the Bohemian Massif, Central Europe. Open porosity was determined from the difference between oven dried and water saturated sample mass. Hydraulic conductivity was measured in pressure cells equipped with pressure and volume controllers. P-wave and S-wave velocities were measured using piezosensors, a precise impulse generator, and an oscilloscope. The presented results show a strong correlation between granite porosity and ultr
