Am Beispiel der Biographie eines aus Wien stammenden Pädagogen tschechischer Herkunft werden die politischen und nationalen Konflikte des ausgehenden 19. und der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Mitteleuropa dargestellt. Dabei wird die Rolle eines Sprachlehrers als eines Mittlers zwischen zwei Kulturen sichtbar, die allerdings in totalitären Regimen nur mit großen Schwierigkeiten wahrzunehmen ist.

Na příkladu biografie vídeňského Čecha a pedagoga Eduarda Vencla jsou představeny politické a národnostní konflikty konce 19. a v první polovině 20. století. ve střední Evropě. Přitom je zvýrazněnan role učitele jazyků jako prostředníka mezi kulturami, která ovšem je jen těžko realizovatelná v podmínkách totalitních politických režimů.
