Original language description
I discuss the passage 37a5-c3 of Plato's Timaeus. I notice the tension between the specialization of the circles in b6-c3 (the World-Soul is said to cognize the sensibles by the circle of the Other, and the intelligibles by the circle of the Same) and the co-operation of the circles in a5-b3. I criticize the Strong-Specialization view (held e.g. by Cherniss 1944), according to which the circle of the Same predicates otherness and the circle of the Other predicates sameness. Next, I criticize the view ofLuc Brisson (1974), according to which the World-Soul is unable to form affirmatives about the sensibles and denials about the intelligibles. Finally, I discuss various possible solutions of the puzzles noticed in the passage.
