Interpersonal and Social Sensibility in Slapstick from the Perspective of Religious History
Original language description
This essay traces the historical context of slapstick as a form of physical humour from biblical history through medieval mystery plays. Here, it takes particular note of the Czech medieval drama The Ointment Seller (Mastičkář). From film slapstick he points in particular to Ch. Chaplin, who was influenced by Christianity in his childhood and in his films shows a sensitivity towards the weak, the disadvantaged, the needy. This attitude belongs to the history of religion - and in conjunction with slapstick creates an impressive paradox, the effect of which on the viewer is well worth considering. These reflections are then concluded with a discussion of the American musical Godspell (based on the John-Michael Tablack novel in David Green's 1973 film version of the same name). We find elements of slapstick and the aforementioned ethical stance. The religionist approach then provides several suggestions for reinterpreting the work.
