The Platonic Hipparchus on Profit and Value
Original language description
The dialogue Hipparchus (I do not deal with the question of its authorship) is a lively and rich dialogue. Its most striking feature is its presentation of the Platonic evaluative reductionism, very similar to the versions known from Plato's Lysis and Charmides: for the purpose of practical evaluation, it is best to restrict oneself to the one-dimensional scale between good and bad (or useful and harmful). I discuss the position of this proposal in the history of ethics and philosophy of action, and I show why all the passages where Plato or his followers use this principle the results are so implausible and unsatisfactory. It is because Plato does not introduce any criterion that would help one to determine a position of an action in question on that scale.
