New methods collection to identify the building and decoration stones provenance
Original language description
The identification of the provenance of historical building stone remains a fundamental challenge, particularly due to the limited availability of samples for petrographic analysis. This study therefore applies non-destructive methods, primarily reflectance spectroscopy in the near- and mid-infrared range (1000?2500 nm), conducted in situ. Each material exhibits a characteristic spectral curve that can be compared with a reference database to determine provenance. The results are refined through traceological analysis and correlated with archival and art-historical research. The methods were applied to stone artefacts and masonry in St Vitus Cathedral, Prague, confirming the strong potential of this interdisciplinary approach.
