Aluminium vs steel piston in passenger car combustion engine

  • Original language description

Low Friction Piston Systems (PCS) have been developed for highly efficient passenger car diesel engines with piston aluminum (Al) and steel (St). The reduction in friction of the piston system LF Al, which consists of low-friction rings and optimized PVDaluminum pistons, has been demonstrated in simulations, and in the floating liner motor. The reduction amounts to 6.4% at 1500 / min. Further reductions of 2.5% can be achieved when a asymmetrical piston profile is used. The low-friction piston system with steel piston reaches in comparison to the series on the same NVH level a friction reduction of 13.9%, Other reduction potential to 64% of the components of friction arises when steel piston by an enlarged installation that are balanced with the noiserequirements of the application Leeds.
