    Correlation plane metrics for determining measurement uncertainty in particle image velocimetry

    The aim of this paper is to present a procedure for determining the accuracy of measurements by particle image velocimetry. In our work we have used synthetic tests to determine the accuracy of measurements. We focused on testing the basic Multistep Cross Correlation algorithm used in PIV measurements based on the use of FFT transformation. This paper describes the potential use of a metric referred to as Mutual Information and the Primary Peak Ratio metric in determining measurement uncertainty using the PIV method. In this paper, the influence of each of the main parameters such as, particle density, particle size gradient, etc. is analyzed. The possibility of correcting the individual metrics with respect to the properties of the correlation plane and the recorded image is described. Based on the synthetic tests and analyses performed, a new correlation plane metric, denoted as the lost pair ratio, is then proposed. For this metric, the same sensitivity analysis of this metric to the individual parameters of the current field is then performed and the possibility of further refining the definition of this metric is discussed. Finally, a practical example of the use of this new metric in the determination of measurement ambiguity by Particle Image Velocimetry is presented.
