Hlavní cíl článku je ukázat jednotící prvky studovaného území a podobný charakter vývoje struktury osídlení. Autor se pokouší definovat hlavní příčiny a důsledky takového vývoje v širším prostorovém a funkčním kontextu. Vznik a vývoj většiny sídel v pánevních okresech byl determinován zejména přírodními podmínkami, konkrétní polohou, ale také politikou.
