History of Therapeutic use of sports activities in psychiatric treatment facilities in central Europe

  • Original language description

Psychiatric theory as well as practice always reflected the general historical process of development of the society. Inclusion of physical exercise in regime treatment of psychiatric subjects was a response to the arising physical education in 19th century, whose activity was always historically connected with social activities. It was possible to hire a teacher of physical education, who was coming to the hospitals to perform simple gymnastic, athletic and breath exercise with the patients. The exercise in treatment with sports exercise was rising after World War II.
