This book summarizes current scientific knowledge of mediation and probation, its use in practical life and the ways in which the public approach this topic. I draw on up-to-date Czech and foreign literature, my own experience gained through further education of mediators, feedback from university students, activities related to re-socialization of convicts and activities of the Ministry of Justice team for the preparation of the Mediation Act. Integrating approach to this topic is social andragogy which looks at the key attributes of working with adult from interdisciplinary viewpoint. There is one very important prerequisite for effective cooperation which is appropriate, well-balanced and friendly communication. In case of dysfunctional communication there arises conflict which brings about goals that are mutually incompatible or differ in significance.
