Original language description
The article deals with land cover change at a countrywide scale in the Czech Republic (i.e. Czechia) after the demise of the Communist regime in 1989. By using satellite images and calculating the change index, we were able to monitor the shifts from oneclass to another. Using a second method, we were able to analyse the differentiation within land cover structures within the individual spatial units (regions) of Czechia in 1990 and 2000. The article focuses on the consequences of political and economic processes as well as the determining influence of natural conditions on agriculture. With regard to the structure of land cover classes, the data revealed the growing heterogeneity of the regions of Czechia. Prior to 1989, the influence of the centrally planned economy on the uniformity of the land cover was considerable. Natural conditions did not play such an important role.
