Original language description
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, membrane vesicles secreted by cells of variety of organisms and tissues into the extracellular environment. They play a crucial role in intercellular communication. As they move through the extracellular environment, EVs can be taken up by recipient cells within the originating organism or even by cells from other organisms. They can serve as excellent biomarker of physiological or pathological conditions. Over the past few decades, EVs have gained significant attention in biomedical research due to their therapeutic applications. They are able to transport a variety of bioactive molecules ? proteins, lipids, RNAs, synthetic molecules including various drugs, antioxidant or immunomodulatory agent. Their composition, structure, and functional properties vary depending on the source. Currently, methodologies for modifying exosomes, both their content and membrane, are being widely developed so the therapeutic field where EVs can be applied is extremely expanding as well as first clinical trials are ongoing. Other sources of exosomes next to classical as animal or human are being studied, which have impressive therapeutic properties from their origin, e.g., various plant derived extracellular vesicles (PELNVs) [Citation1?4].
