In the years 1975 - 1979, the longitudinal twenty years lasting epidemiological study of the risk factors of atherosclerosis in the population of 1419 middle-aged men was started. The main aims of the study were: to determine prevalence of the risk factors of atherosclerosis (RFA, i.e. smoking, obesity, hypertension, hypercholesteroaemia, family anamnesis), to follow up and to influence the development of RFA in order to decrease incidence and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This work compares the survival in the risk group, i.e. the group with RFA and without CVD, and in the normal group, i.e. the group without both RFA and CVD, and explores which RFA at the entry into the study significantly influenced the CVD mortality in the 20-year period.
