This contribution is focused on the problem of old industrial regions (OIR). The main aim of the article is to summarise the basics theoretical concepts of old industrial regions development. In the first part of this paper there is a theoretical framework of OIR development (e.g. the causes of their disparities) and in the following part there is an attempt to describe other specifications of old industrial regions on the base of practical experience from The Ruhr area (Ruhrgebiet). The final part of the article deals with the process of restructuralization of OIR with accent on supporting local innovative environment.

Příspěvek řeší problematiku "old industrial regions". Hlavní smysl příspěvku je sumarizovat základní teoretické přístupy k rozvoji starých průmyslových regionů. Nejprve je představen základní teoretický rámec problematiky, následuje diskuse základních příčin úpadku starých průmyslových regionů a možnosti jejich rozvoje (zejména v souvislosti s podporou inovačních aktivit v rámci těchto regionů). Vybrané aspekty restrukturalizace starých průmyslových regionů jsou přiblíženy na praktických zkušenostech zregionu Porúří.
