Breakthrough curves for the sorption of acid and basic dyes onto wood shavings
Original language description
Spruce wood shavings from Picea abies were used for an adsorptive removal of synthetic dyes from waters. The sorption characteristics of the wood shavings were measured in the column arrangement for the acid dyes Egacid Red and Egacid Orange, and for thebasic dyes Methylene Blue and Rhodamine B. Experimental breakthrough curves were evaluated using the Thomas model and its modified form ? generalized logistic function (Clark model). The generalized logistic function provided a better fit to the experimental data. Maximum concentrations of the dyes in the sorbent (sorption capacities in the through-flow mode) ranged from ca. 0.02 to 0.17 mmol g-1 in dependence on an initial concentration of the dye. These values agree well with the maximum sorption capacities determined for the same sorbent in a batch arrangement (for Methylene Blue and Egacid Orange), and are quite comparable with the sorption capacities reported in literature for other non-conventional sorbents.
