Old Maps as a Source of Landscape Changes - Georeferencing, Accuracy and Error Detection
Original language description
Nowadays, old maps are widely used as a source of valuable information about historical landscape. The process of using these maps is no longer domain of cartographers or specialists in GIS. With rapid increase of using GIS software by general public it is important to remind the whole process of old maps analysis and highlight main types of errors when georeferencing and/or creating vector data models of these maps. Georeferencing is a process of transforming map image to reference coordinate system used in current GIS software. As old maps can be created centuries ago, sometimes the original cartographic projection and coordinate system are unknown. It is highly recommended to try to find at least the class of the used projection. The more different cartographic projections (old map vs. reference coordinate system) the higher errors can be expected. Choosing the appropriate transformation method is essential to get high quality outputs. The transformation is based on computation of the key using set of ground control points. Identifying of wrongly assigned ground control points is another method to decrease possibility of poor results. In our project we are using old maps for landscape reconstruction of highly human-affected area in North-West Bohemia. Not only georeferenced maps as a result, but estimation of their precision and expected accuracy of derived digital data is important as well. We tried to sum up the whole process of old maps analysis, identify potential weak aspects and apply our knowledge and findings to avoid errors. Outputs of our project are seamless high-quality georeferenced maps with information about their accuracy.
