Soil in the anthropogenically affected landscape

  • Original language description

Soil is the basic condition for life on Earth. However, soil exploitation is greatly inefficient and especially unsustainable in these days. The sustainable development strategy defines clearly how soil should be treated to preserve or to improve quality and quantity of the soil for future generations. Proper soil management should ensure sustainable soil development, mainly protection against erosion and pollution, and against agricultural land fund grabbing. With the growing population on the planet, these problems are even more ongoing both globally and regionally. This contribution is focused on region which deals with these problems the most in the Czech Republic, The Northern Bohemia region (districts Chomutov, Most, Teplice, Ústí nad Labem). This area is anthropogenically affected due to intensive brown coal mining. Recently, partial breaking of the previous mining limits was approved there; therefore a restoration and revitalization will be needed there in the future. Significant number of the population lives in this area, and that is why there is an effort to integrate the devastated landscape into the surroundings, and also the effort to introduce sustainable forms of soil management. A project called Sustainable forms of management in anthropogenically affected landscape deals with this issue within Faculty for Environment at J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem.
