A Work of Art at the Centre of Public Interest - Stories, Characters, Forms and Values in the Process of Social Representation
Original language description
As early as 2004, in his essay "Haven't We Had Enough?" the Slovenian art theoretician Igor Zabel called for the rethinking and cultural reinterpretation of the trauma associated with Central Europe's totalitarian past. This rethinking could not only return this territory into the all-European space once and for all, but might also significantly contribute to its search for a new identity in the face of the dramatic social and political challenges in the current globalised world. lt is obvious that the situation in Central Europe has long been heading towards a deep crisis, which threatens a return to undemocratic social trends and political practices infamously familiar from the period of totalitarianism. To follow the socio-cultural discourse found in current artistic pro-duction, we can focus on strategies that apply the princi ples of appropriation to significant visual indicators of totalitarian systems. Motivation for the use of such historicist references, however, is not primarily anchored in the past, but is open to a critical and often even painful investigation of the present. After all, the situations, events, processes and constant pressure that grew out of a totalitarian ideological and instrumental framework - elements which gradually deformed, and ultimately destroyed, the basic ethical standards of both the community and each individua! - still insidiously affect our everyday lives, even in today's new context. The visualisation and artistic interpreta-tions of these elements are paradoxically very restricted by the glut of media images which, through countless information channels, reduce our ability to understand current events and to give adequate conscious responses at both the persona! and societal levels. Uncovering the historical layers of those visual icons that represent a basic societal consensus and revealing how they have been updated over time through artistic intervention and a shift in content towards the present-day context, constitute activation strategies which make it possible to identity the connections between the defective mechanisms of the totalitarian past and their existence today as seen in increasingly limited democracy.
