The search for happiness
Original language description
Curator Lenka Sýkorová (Associate Professor at the Faculty of Art and Design, Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Ústí nad Labem) and artist Jan Pfeiffer delivered a three-day workshop to the first-year MTL Art students at the University of Malta in November, 2024. "The search for happiness" was the general theme of the workshop, with sessions on curatorial practices, happiness and melancholy in the history of art and discussions about the students' own research around these themes. The students' work forms part of a yearlong project supported by other lecturers (Robert Zahra, Paul Scerri, Mark Anthony Lughermo) and course coordinator Professor Raphael Vella for the University of Malta. The workshop was followed by Jan Pfeiffer's exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, in which the students participated with a filmed performance.Worskhop The Search for Happiness is a seemingly simple metaphor conceived as a physical spatial experience in a gallery space. The search for happiness, joy and fulfilment is like an endless journey that has its ups and downs. The installation is preceded by a video performance, which is a collaborative effort between artist Jan Pfeiffer and students from the Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Malta. The outcome of Lenka Sýkorová's pedagogical and curatorial collaboration with partner institutions FUD UJEP in Ústí nad Labem, Pedagogical Faculty of Charles University in Prague and the Faculty of Education of the University of Malta will be used in the blended learning curriculum at FUD. Jan Pfeiffer as a teacher in collaboration with the theoretician Lenka Sýkorová in the drawing installation also work with the concept of expected future events and the desire not to be dominated by visions of the future, but to focus on the possibility of being here and now. The outcome of the workshop is a public presentation in the form of an exhibition created for the exhibition space Space C, Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, Malta.
