The book was prepared in the work package 2: Structural Assessment and Monitoring of European project ARCHES: Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway Structures. The main goal of the book is to collect information about decision makingprocesses associated with the maintenance and reconstruction of bridges and to prepare a recommendation. The recommendation was prepared on the basis of collected information and it is concentrated on New Member States (NMS) and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). The book is divided into five main parts: -description of the basic structure of the bridge management system - BMS (chapter 2), -literature review of research reports and conference papers (chapter 3.1 and 3.2), -national reports (chapter 3.3), -questionnaire survey (chapter 3.4), -recommendation (chapter 4).
