Using floating car data for speed analyses – Czech experience
Original language description
(Presented at 11th International Road Safety Seminar GAMBIT 2016 in Gdańsk) Speed is known to be a risk factor and thus a critical safety issue, calling for investigation and proposal of suitable measures. While speed analyses traditionally relied on data collected by stationary devices (speed guns, traffic counters, loops or tubes), these means provide results limited in both time and space. An interesting alternative is provided by floating car data (FCD), which circumvent the mentioned limitations by using continual records of GPS positions from vehicle fleets. Recent research application of FCD enabled area-wide analysis of speeds in curves on Czech national road network. The presentation describes the study, methodology, results and applications, including comparison to previous approaches based on EU project SAFESTAR; it also summarizes and discusses potential limitations of FCD, such as sample size, data representativeness or definition of free-flow speed.
