A comparison between official animal-vehicle collision data and data reported by volunteers
Original language description
Animal-vehicle collisions (AVC) on roads which cause damage on vehicles are registered in an official crash database maintained by Police in the Czech Republic. We have launched recently an AVC report application www.srazenazver.cz (roadkills in Czech) to provide a map overview on this and additional roadkill on Czech roads. This application is accessible through common web browsers and allows the user to input, edit and browse data gathered by other users. The data is visualized in the form of maps, graphs or tables. The application is currently used by 450 volunteers and hunter-area administrators who added between 9/2014 and 11/2016 about 4.000 records, 75 % of which were roadkill of mammals. The official police data which did not have species directly attributed amounted 35,000 records. We have developed and applied full-text filters to free text which is attributed as a comment to official data. 44 % records were successfully identified in this process in terms of species (75 % roe deer and 15 % wild boar). We will discuss in this presentation similarities and differences between official and volunteer data. Further we will summarize our experience with hiring volunteers and mention existing obstacles why only minority of hunters and hunter-area administrators are currently involved in roadkill data collection.
