Which validation is more valid?
Original language description
(presented at 6th NTSA Annual Scientific Seminar, Copenhagen, 9. - 10. 5. 2017) A wide range of surrogate safety measures (SSM), i.e. proactive non-accident based indicators of risk and unsafety, have been developed and applied to a various extent. However, their validity still remains the fundamental issue. For example, in the field of traffic conflicts, which are probably the most known SSM, validation efforts have lasted for almost 5 decades, without reaching a definite conclusion. There have also been long discussions about differences between absolute/relative validity, or product/process validation. Nevertheless, these discussions often deal with situations once the data are collected. It may be interesting to take a step back and think about the way how are data collected and its potential implications on subsequent “validity of validation”. The presentation will summarize practical experience and examples with data collection and validation from on-going research project, focusing on assessing safety based on data collected from floating vehicles.
