Using speed profiles to investigate the impact of traffic calming measures

  • Original language description

(presented at XXIX International Baltic Road Conference, Tallinn, 27. - 30. 8. 2017) Various traffic calming measures have been used world-wide to reduce speeding and improve safety on urban roads. In order to study their impact, the studies traditionally relied on static measurement techniques, such as roadside radars or hand-held speed guns. Recently it is possible to collect dynamic data from moving vehicles, which allow calculation of speed and determination of speed profiles. Aim of the study is to test the feasibility of this approach for investigation of impact of traffic calming measures. For this purpose, typical measures in the Czech Republic, Poland and Lithuania were selected. The study included data collection, analysis and interpretation. The methodology and findings enable comparing the effectiveness of traffic calming measures with different geometrical parameters, including their optimal spacing.
