INDIRECT WASTEWATER DISCHARGE – CHALLENGE FOR MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
Original language description
Industry, although restricted by legislation, emits a wide range of substances into the environment, including high volumes of wastewater. Since wastewater is one of the sources of environmental pollution, it is necessary to treat it. Even if wastewater recycling seems to be the most desirable solution, wastewater discharge may be unavoidable in many cases. Wastewater treatment technologies have undergone many changes in the past decades, based on our understanding that different types of wastewater require different approaches, especially if they contain specific pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, ecotoxic compounds, etc. Despite the knowledge of the techniques and conditions necessary for removing pollutants, industrial wastewater is often treated by municipal wastewater treatment plants with minimal or no pre-treatment.
