Transversal profiles of dissolved oxygen in thin-layer open outdoor algal cultures.
Original language description
Differential mass balance of dissolved oxygen (DO) in algal culture layer flowing down an inclined open cultivation surface was set up. Using simplified aussumptions, a differential equation was derived for the course of DO concentration profile across algal culture. In the development of the equation were considered: hydraulics of culture flow on cultivation surface, rate O2 evolution by algae, molecular, iffusivity and turbulent diffusivity of oxygen inside of layer. The equation was integratednumerically for apporopriate boundary conditions. Computationms performed for 6mm thick layer of the alga Chlorella kessleri, flowing at velocity 50cm.s-1 on inclined cultivation in 28m long and 4m wide outdoor culture unit revealed that main resistance againstDO mass transfer from algal culture into atmosphere was found in boundary layerof culture near algal culture-atmosphere interface.
