Family Formation in Changing Economic and Societal Conditions in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The text is part of a publication that focuses on the structural opportunities and constraints to family formation by young people in 11 selected countries and highlights the main contextual factors of family behaviour. The authors of the national chapters reach similar conclusions that the process of family formation is determined by both external conditions and their subjective reflection in harmony with value factors and expectations. The chapters for the selected countries were prepared according to a common framework. The context of family formation is framed within the national socio-historical context and relevant demographic trends in the Czech Republic and assessed in terms of the normative framework, socio-economic conditions (such as labour market, housing conditions, risk of poverty and social exclusion) and institutional conditions. The chapter concludes with a brief assessment of the specificities of the Czech Republic in the area of family formation, with a focus on family policy reflection and a comparison of declared preferences and actual family behaviour. The author states, among other things, that Czech society is open to various patterns of family behaviour in terms of basic legal norms and its value-normative setting. Public policies focus primarily on providing the most equal conditions for the life and development of children, regardless of the form of family cohabitation. However, within the existing contextual conditions, there are real differences in the fulfilment of family functions, particularly between two-parent and one-parent families and between married and unmarried couples.
