Effect of Various Plasma Nitriding Procedures on Surface Characteristics of P/M High Speed Steel
Original language description
Plasma nitriding is an effective way for surface strengthening of tool materials. It is the reason why the effect of various plasma nitriding techniques on the P/M M2 type high speed steel characteristics like microstructure, hardness profiles, nitrogenconcentration depth profiles and phase constitution nave been investigated. It has been determined that only the treatment at the temperature of 500 oC and higher, combined with nitrogen rich atmosphere (N2 : H2 = 1:3) leads to acceptable high level of mentioned surface properties. Material surface processed by such a way consists of fine nitrides and carbonitrides that are distributed uniformly in metallic matrix. If the temperature was lower or, in case when nitrogen poor atmosphere was used for the processing, the nitrided layers were very thin and their hardness was considered to be insufficient for industrial use.
