Plasma nitriding is an effective way for surface strengthening of tool materials. It is the reason why the effect of various plasma nitriding techniques on the surface characteristics of P/M ledeburitic tool steels is frequently discussed question. Nitrided layers formed on the surface of various ledeburitic steels differ one from each others not only as a function of the processing parameters used, but the close relationship between their characteristics and chemical composition of steel was also determined. The last statement concerns particularly the vanadium content of the substrate. The increase of vanadium rich MC - phase portion was found as the main factor that restricts the nitrogen diffusion depth, formation of special nitrides and, as a result, the surface hardness improvement. Otherwise, the plasma nitriding leads to considerable hardness increase caused mainly by the formation of nitrides in surface regions of processed specimens.
