    Presented at 10. International conference on WWER fuel performance, modelling and experimental support; Sandanski (Bulgaria); 7-14 Sep 2013. Most of the currently used fuel performance codes treat the fuel stack using a simplified ?1.5D? where individualpellets are not distinguished and the fuel stack is taken to be symmetrical. In reality, the individual fuel pellets are subject to thermal strains, densification and swelling, which induce fuel pellet cracking. FEM codes ABAQUS and ANSYS were thereforeused to simulate initiation and propagation of cracks in UO2 fuel pellet during simulated power ramp condition in 2D and 3D geometries.
