Testing Biocidal Polymers for the preparation of Paints and Varnishes for protection against the Biodeterioration Process. XVI International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium

  • Original language description

Biodeterioration is an undesirable process, triggered by living organisms (bacteria, fungi, or algae), which can affect building materials such as plaster and paints. New paints and varnishes with encapsulated nanodispersion biocidal systems can preventdamage by microorganisms. Encapsulated biocides release their active ingredients into the environment slowly and, therefore, the new generation of paints and varnishes will be more environmentally friendly. The study aim was to select an effective biopolymer for encapsulation. No validated method is available for testing slow-release biocides. The purpose of this study was to develop tests suitable for this type of agents. Of 65 samples of biopolymers intended for encapsulation, 22 showed 100% biocidalactivity against bacteria and 15 were 100% effective against fungi. After tests with additional contamination, three samples of biocidal polymers were selected for masterbatch encapsulation into a dispersion polymer system and further tes
