Measurement of the mechanical properties of honeycomb panels focusing on the influence of the relationship of used adhesive to the cell size

  • Original language description

Measurements of sandwich panels were focused on adhesive ? core cell size relationship and its consequential influence on elastic properties of specimens. Panels were made of aluminium facesheets and aluminium honeycomb core. Epoxy resin and polyurethanewere used as adhesives. Elastic moduli and strength characteristics in the main directions of anisotropy were measured. All parameters were considered as independent of each other. The identified engineering constants were compared then. Measurements onall samples consistently showed that there was a significant decrease of strength at the constant cell size in both transverse and longitudinal directions with increasing thickness of the honeycomb core. In the case of shear strength the type of adhesive was not vital. It is shown that the honeycomb panels with polyurethane adhesive and the core cell size of 16 mm had similar mechanical properties to the panels with epoxy and the cell size of 6 mm. Because they also had a lower average
