Testing of mechanical properties of thick-walled carbon fiber composite for FEM simulations
Original language description
The aim of this work was to determine elastic constants of the carbon fiber composite for FEM simulations of the thick-walled unidirectional laminate. The samples were fabricated using the epoxy foil Letoxit LFX 035 (240 g/m2) and three different types of carbon reinforcement. The reinforcements were unidirectional CHS fibers (50K, 400 g/m2), unidirectional UMS fibers (24K, 320 g/m2) and fabric (plain weave, 160 g/m2). Two different types of samples were fabricated, one thin-walled and one thick-walled. Thin-walled samples were used to get experimental data for FEM simulation, thick-walled samples served for comparison between simulation and experiment. The average fiber volume content for the unidirectional samples was 60%, for the fabric 45%. For the fabrication process, simple steel mould was used. Individual layers of carbon reinforcement were placed in the form (in 0° direction) with the epoxy foil between them and then hot pressed using a force of 5 000 N and temperature of 120 °C for 1 hour. This type of epoxy resin was selected because of easy manipulation during the lamination and also because of very good mechanical properties in wide range of temperatures (-75°C to 110 °C). Values of the thick-walled composite deflection obtained by FEM simulations coincide with experimentally obtained values during throughout the load of sample. One of the results was the comparison the modulus of elasticity from the tensile test and 3-point bending test of thick-walled laminate.
