ON-ROAD PARTICULATE MATTER EMISSIONS FROM HOMOGENEOUS CHARGE SPARK IGNITION ENGINES
Original language description
Particle emissions have been historically regulated only for compression ignition engines. For homogeneous charge spark-ignition automobile engines, they were viewed as relatively low, and were not considered a problem. In this study, the emissions of two gasoline powered automobiles were examined during on-road operation. A Škoda Favorit with a carbureted engine with no electronic controls and no catalytic converter, and a Škoda Fabia with a multi-point injection and a three-way catalytic converter were equipped with a portable, on-board emissions monitoring system, and driven on the road, both in regular traffic and on a test track. The particulate emissions have increased sharply with enrichment during high-power and transient operation, but remained, for both vehicles, relatively low, on the order of miligrams of particulate matter per km driven.
