Investigation of Plasma Sterilization of Nanofiber Fabric
Original language description
Medical and biological applications such as tissue engineering have high demands on used materials. Nanofibers made from polyvinyl alcohol are biocompatible, biodegradable and have specific structural properties. Tissue engineering requires sterilized surfaces, which can be obtained using low-pressure microwave plasma discharge. The aim of this paper is a study of nanofiber sterilization for tissue engineering. Experimental conditions were found in order to avoid degradation of nanofibers. Degradation was examined by SEM. Nanofibers were vaccinated with Escherichia Coli and Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria. Sterilization efficiency was evaluated according to the number of bacterial colonies restored by incubation. Sterilization of nanofiber surface usingoptimized conditions was fully successful after 30 or 60 seconds treatment. The applicability of lowpressure microwave plasma treatment for the surface sterilization was demonstrated.
