Portable proportional exhaust sampling system for particulate matter emissions measurement: first experiences.
Original language description
The measurement of internal combustion engine exhaust emissions of particulate matter (PM), the most harmful component in the exhaust to human health and one of the most pressing urban air quality problems, is challenging without a full-flow dilution tunnel, during transient tests and at decreasing PM levels. To allow for such measurements on the road and in lesser equipped laboratories, a portable exhaust sampling system has been developed. The system uses a pair of mass flow controllers, one of whichmeters filtered air into a miniature partial-flow dilution tunnel, and the other one regulates the flow of diluted exhaust through a filter on which PM is sampled. The first experiences with this system during transient engine tests are described, with the focus on system dynamic response and comparison against reference gravimetric system.
