Natural Materials with a High Content of SiO2 Nanoparticles and the Methods of Their Extraction

  • Original language description

The aim of the article is to compare the suitability of particular methods of chemical treatment used for the purification of natural materials which are characterized by high content of silica and their subsequent obtaining in the form of silicon dioxide nanoparticles. Rice husks were used as a natural material containing the highest amounts of silica. A chemical treatment is carried out with the aim to remove undesirable accompanying ions such as Na, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, Fe. These ions obtained by plant during its growth contaminate SiO2 nanoparticles from the point of view of their subsequent utilization, decrease their specific surface area and during the process of combustion of raw rice husks the above mentioned ions act as a fluxing agent. The process of purification is carried out by treatment with selected acids (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid) under different conditions. The product after the chemical treatment is compared with the feedstock in terms of quality and quantity of ions removed and then burned. Nanoparticles of silicon dioxide as the final product of the entire process are evaluated from the point of view purity and size. Methods used to the process evaluation are: SEM, EDX, ICPOES.
