A feasibility study for mapping the movement of raising fibers in DC and AC electric field
Original language description
Electrostatic spinning has recently witnessed a massive development both in terms of new material development and optimization of industrial facilities for their production. The novel trend is a shift from already traditional DC electric field to AC. The use of AC electric field, however, carries increase of fibers productivity, but also means unprecedented fiber formation mechanisms. Basic research uses simple visualization methods to detect and optimize fiber motion in electric field. This project focuses on the use of revised Global Imaging methodologies, particularly PIV techniques for tracking fiber structures as well as secondary phenomena. Such a phenomenon is the electrical wind associated with electrical spinning. . We can call this process as two phase flow from the view of fluid mechanics. The electric field in the vicinity of charged electrode is inducing the liquid flow as well as the gas motion. Both phases are then mutually affected. The influence of electric wind is not negligible in DC spinning, when it reaches about 2m/s, but also in AC, when its speed is up to 5m/s. The nature and shape of the flow caused by the electrical wind is determined by the shape of the electrodes. Quantification and qualitative description can optimize the electrodes or help optimally use the given configuration. In the PIV study, we compared the effect of two electrodes on the behavior of the fibers in the electric field and the nature of the electrical wind, both in DC and AC electric fields.
